EXPECTATIONS OF THE MENTOR AND MENTEE
MENTOR:
As a mentor, what is expected of you?
- Provide perspective on current genetic practices and professional issues in the field of genetic counseling
- Provide insight into appropriate and relevant employment situations
- Assist in transition of student to professional or professional specialty to new professional specialty.
- Encourage and identify additional opportunities for networking
- Assist with professional development of the career and /or during the job search process
What does it take to be a good mentor?
- Be flexible, take the initiative, and be responsive. Your experiences and encouragement will go a long way to helping your mentee.
- Remember what it was like when you were in your mentee's position. Realize that s/he may not understand many of the cultural norms and responsibilities of a genetic counselor in your situation that you take for granted.
- Feel free to share your personal experiences, pose questions, and engage in small talk until a relevant topic for discussion emerges.
- Be responsive to your mentee's questions and comments. If you do not have the time to offer a full response shortly after you receive a message, send a short message letting her/him know you will be in contact when you have the opportunity.
MENTEE:
As a mentee, what is expected of you?
- Respect the guidance and support offered by the mentor
- Exchange ideas and information about current issues and practices in genetic counseling.
- Begin/continue the process of networking
- Be flexible, take the initiative, and be responsive to your mentor's questions and comments. If you do not have the time to offer a full response shortly after you receive a message, send a short message letting her/him know you will be in contact when you have the opportunity.
